Hello, and welcome to The Career Girl, a space designed to inform, inspire and excite! Newly launched today (15th November), we may appear pretty small right now, but hey, from little acorns mighty oaks… and have we some big plans for you! But for starters, have a look around our site and hopefully find yourself some inspiration…
The Career Girl is built around interviews with inspiring women in the first 15-ish years of their working lives; these women are doing the jobs your school probably never told you existed and your exams never prepared you for. Each profile consists of the same ten questions designed to give you as much insight into their current role and, perhaps more importantly, their route to reaching it. The profiles have been roughly grouped into categories so you can browse by industry, but also tagged so you can browse by other, more nuanced features.
I started The Career Girl because I had both been asked the ‘how did you get that job’ question many times but asked it myself every time I heard of someone getting a new a job I’d never previously heard of, or of someone going from studying one area to launching a business in something completely different. I wanted to know how these women were getting to where they were, and what those jobs really looked like on a day-to-day basis - I still want to know that!
Knowledge is power, and the first step along a fulfilling career path is being able to make informed choices about the direction you’re stepping in. There are surely more opportunities out there for women today than at any time in our history so far, and yet if women are still making educational and professional decisions unaware of the vast and incredible pool of careers that lie open to them, they as individuals and we as a society must surely be missing out. The Career Girl is hopefully going to give at least a little glimpse of what’s out there.
This blog will be updated regularly with highlights from new profiles, interviews with women at the pinnacles of their careers and articles on different areas of work; you can also sign up to our newsletter which will go out weekly with news from the site and links to other inspiring news, reads and listens. Also, check out our Resources page here, which features links to other sites that might be of interest to Career Girl readers.
If you’ve any suggestions for the site - whether that’s an improvement or someone you think would make for a great feature - please do get in touch. This is currently pretty much a one-woman-band so I’m very much open to ideas and input from others.
In the meantime I hope you enjoy!
